That is, of course, dependent on me finishing a manuscript in a timely way by the end of February which I am well on my way to doing, having completed over one hundred species accounts thus far. In the meantime, I have whittled down the number of birds I want to include to 298 species, which is still a bit more than I am supposed to include.
But it has paid dividends with as many as a dozen bird species breeding or attempting to breed in my overgrown wasteland. As it waited for a parent to return with some food, it picked through the leaf litter to see if it could find something for itself. So the whole plot now looks like a meadow. Two chicks! I was so proud.
Even so, he still knew many species and always yearned to learn about the wildlife he encountered. Bushwacking? Not in this place.
Passing through the high oak dominated rainforests of Quetzal National Park, this road can also turn up Unspotted Saw-whet Owls and other species of the night but is much more birdy during the day. The night was understandably cool, not quite freezing but cool enough to warrant a sweater and jacket at this high elevation birding hotspot.
Endless notifications about 3% of intact forest remaining here, another species falling into the endangered species category – it all can get overwhelming sometimes. Bananaquits and Golden-headed Manakins twittered and whirred constantly but any visual confirmation was only achieved with the former species.
I applaud responsibility, but please don’t litter.) Sure, migration was in evidence — both Kinglet species present, Hermit Thrushes everywhere, White-throated Sparrows tuning up their songs in such abundance that they provided an ongoing soundtrack, American Robins and assorted blackbirds on the move. They diverged at approximately the same time as the rockjumpers (two quite unique bird species endemic to Southern Africa and now in their own family), and as a result for a while were even placed in the same family. You’d think, then, that applying science to philosophy by studying the evolutionary underpinnings of thought and behavior across species would be right up my alley. That said, some of his conclusions about our duty to preserve other species are in line with my own, and maybe the topic could hardly be avoided in a book like this.
