Visitors to T&T may be familiar with the area – the famed Aripo Livestock Station. Access is restricted, and the livestock referred to are highly temperamental water buffalo. Our jaunt for the CBC of 2015 turned out to be the first of many, as I have been assigned that area each count since then.

Cow Birds

They’re all named for livestock. Bucorvus , the name of the two ground hornbills, refers to their black plumage and to their bovine mandibles: literally, they are “cow crows.&# The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads. The tertium comparationis between birds and cows isn’t always visual.

The double-barrel name comes from the Maori and Pakeha names for the island, like many places where one or the other hasn’t won out the island is referred to in all instances as both. It was to one such island that I went to this week, Matiu /Somes Island in Wellington Harbour.

One outspoken proponent of factory farming cited in the HPMAJ column is "Trent Loos, a rancher, journalist and vocal livestock supporter." According to the HPMAJ column, "Loos told cattle producers the livestock industry must show the public that there are moral and ethical justifications for taking the life of an animal to feed a person.
