Outside of Florida, there are also growing populations in Los Angeles, San Antonio, and Houston. Red-masked Parakeet, a near-threatened endemic of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru, has sizeable population clusters in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale.

Birding Shanghai in April 2022

Apparently, they were introduced in the Los Angeles area of California in 1917, and I really think they deserve living in L.A. As you can imagine, the study was done in China. Finally, in such a poor birding month, even my least favorite Shanghai bird – the Spotted Dove – gets a mentioning.

Then we crossed the south San Diego Trough to Thirty Mile Bank, eventually reaching a place called “The Corner,” which, as I understand it, is where San Diego and Los Angeles counties meet Mexico. Exactly how that cartographic alchemy works, I do not know. Then we headed back.
