Neighbouring (FYRO) Macedonia nowadays has about 20 pairs, while two decades ago they had 135! And so, I was driving from Greece to Serbia… in central Macedonia, two birds were circling not far from the motorway… black and white (above)… perhaps White Storks on migration? Reasons for this situation are numerous.

Whooper Swans winter in good numbers Around 20,000 Common Pochard winter on the lake A flock of Ferruginous Ducks (these were on nearby Lake Doirani on the border with North Macedonia ) One bird that has notably increased in numbers in recent years is the Common Crane , with January counts of up to 140 birds.

The series of birding workshops and meetings continued across the map, through Ulcinj, Montenegro, then Samobor, Croatia and Stip (described here ), North Macedonia, leading to Brussels, the unofficial capital of EU. He couldn’t understand. Neither can I.

The Prespa Lakes National Park in Greece is well hidden among the mountains at the triple border with Albania in the west and the FYRO Macedonia in the north. The mountains are more than 2300 metres high, while the lakes lie at the lowest point of the park, at 850 m a.s.l.
