I birded savannas of Southern Africa, I birded India and Central America, and I always missed having a local mammal guide with me. No, Madagascar is the most famous for an endemic group of mammals: lemurs, sifakas, indri, aye-aye – in total, 112 endemic species and subspecies of lemurs alone! Yet, those bird guides are hefty.

Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. New Zealand has been the recipient of a higher than average number of introduced species, in particular a range of mammals from elk to mice. This is a very serious business here in New Zealand.
Also, it is a part of the international ecological corridor and the “Confluence of the Sava and the Danube Rivers” Important Bird Area (IBA), already proposed for a nature reserve by the Government’s Institute for the Protection of Nature of Serbia. The long, sharp, and barbed thorns discourage rats and other small mammals from climbing the cacti to reach the eggs and chicks. If small mammal predators are a worry for a mother hummingbird, the tall vertical wall and rushing water at the bottom of it would nearly ensure that no mammal can reach the nest.
This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. The commonest large mammals of the park are smallish, spotted forest deer – Chitals, and we often encounter small herds.
Hopefully, this role gives the birds some protection, as indicated here : “Himalayan vultures are highly respected within the Buddhist culture of the Tibetan plateau, playing a unique role in a centuries-old sky burial tradition (feeding of human corpses to vultures at specific sites) that is followed by about four million Tibetan people.
While snakes protect their eggs, and may protect their young for a short period of time after they hatch, baby snakes are very soon on their own. Even wild mammals – fawns, squirrels, bunnies, etc. Although it might look like they could have a pair or two lurking beneath all those chest feathers, they actually don’t.
The Reva is not protected. In May I plan to discuss the possibilities of the legal protection with the city officials and your comments and views may strengthen that case. In May I plan to discuss the possibilities of the legal protection with the city officials and your comments and views may strengthen that case.
When a mosquito bites an infected bird and then bites a human or mammal, it can transmit the virus. It can affect humans, birds, horses, dogs, cats, and other mammals. Now that you are aware of the diseases that can be caused by mosquitoes, you may be wondering how to prevent these illnesses and protect your pets.
It is built to reach out into the water when the dam is full and is reached along a raised walkway, screened from the mammals, reptiles and birds that may be roosting, resting, feeding, drinking or waiting in ambush close by. Mammals visit the dam as well as the birds. All this was seen before I even stepped into the hide.
From that year onward my work became dedicated to the protection of the area, as well as promotion of local ecotourism possibilities. Also, there are more than 44 species of mammals: Otter , Wildcat , Grey Wolf , Beech Martens , Wild Boar , and Golden Jackal. I’ve written at length in the past about the circumstances of that extinction event, how the rich endemic fauna was utterly vulnerable to introduced mammals and how waves of invaders wiped out different groups of species. New Zealand faces massive challenges in protecting its species. Image by Glen Fergus. Insanely ambitious?

The goal is to decrease the harm that sonar does to marine mammals. Meanwhile, the Navy is also asking NMFS to allow incidental harm and fatalities to marine mammals from training exercises in a 122,400-square-mile section of the Pacific Ocean off the Northwest coast. From the Seattle P-I (yep, the online newspaper!).

Initially, I wasn’t that excited about seeing mammals. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras.
Every person has a responsibility to be part of the solution by doing something to protect and encourage the re-establishment of biodiversity. Growing local plants and thus local insects encourages other organisms from higher in the food web, like birds, frogs and mammals to arrive and survive.
The Pantanal “is a bit like the savannas of Africa: an open area with large mammals, crocodiles, and large ratites. On the other hand, this is good news, because if a lot of money comes in, then the Brazilian government will be motivated to protect the area.” The safari 4×4s and lodges complete the picture.
As most people know cats, both feral and domestic, have a pretty big impact on wild birds and other wildlife, and the effect of mammals is particularly profound in New Zealand. Even wiping out a majority of mammals from the third biggest island is a challenge, and not just logistically.

It’s home to Kokako and Little Spotted Kiwi , and has been a refuge used in protecting the endangered Kakakpo. The species was lost for over a hundred years before being rediscovered in 2003.
I want him (I am not a sexist – simply, have never met a lady guide, although I have some among my FB friends) to know mammals and trees, too, but also local history and who and when made that hilltop citadel that we drove by. Knowing birds and where to find them is only the first step. Bhola Mawaskar is a man of his word.
Rather, my trip to the American Museum of Natural History last week was enlivened, however slightly, by spotting a Rock Pigeon perched on top of the elephants in the Hall of African Mammals, safely out of the elements and unexposed to Central Park’s hawks. But in the end, being dead doesn’t protect an animal from mortality.
In July 2013, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources held a meeting in Bremerhaven in Germany, to decide whether to turn the Ross Sea into a marine protected area. And the Mammals. Back to the Future – the Case for Protection. Finally – the Seabirds.
The gamekeeper drives by, I wave my greetings but do not mention the jackals I am observing at the moment: this animal is not protected in Serbia and is allowed for killing year-round (one may say “hunting” instead, but I am having problems trying to spot the difference). All this happens less than a mile from the nearest houses.
And ours shouldn’t isolate birding blogs from our natural (pardon the pun) allies exploring topics like invertebrates, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, flora, fungus, and ecosystems of every kind, right? Nature bloggers deserved a more tailored solution, which is why I issued the following invitation in January 2008 : Blogs are special.

Leaving from the harbour on boats were tours to swim with one of New Zealand’s most endangered mammal species, the Hector’s Dolphin. They know their stuff, care about the dolphins, and give a portion of the profits to help protect the species, which, by the way, recently got a no-take zone where we saw them!
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) received the Humane Society’s Legislative Leader award for her leadership in protecting animals. The Humane Society of the United States cited Senator Cantwell’s efforts to improve marine mammal rescue capability, including such challenges as disentangling marine mammals from fishing nets.
The forest grows on the new lakeshore and it, too, is a mere 15 years old, but already provides an important corridor for large mammals such as Roe Deer and even Brown Bears , which sometimes come down to feed on beans. The lake water level dropped 10 metres in only 15 years and I was now driving along the old lakeshore.
The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. Going even lower, we add a Cirl Bunting and a Syrian Woodpecker. Enough of the mountains.
