Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. During WWII, the forest was used as a base of the local Partisan squad (the communist resistance), hiding in subterranean shelters.
The number of individual birds and mammals alone that are affected by these factors are countless; and when you consider fish, reptiles and amphibians, it is hard to comprehend the magnitude of life that gets wiped out around the world (and certainly including the U.S.) There is nothing abstract or controversial about this.
And even with that, it’s difficult for all of us – whether we’re quarantining, sheltering in place, or just hunkering down – to escape the strange, oppressive monotony of our new day-to-day lives. For one thing, all this social distancing can make each day feel “like déjà vu all over again”, as a famous ball player once put it.
His hagiography describes an incident in which, as a child, he is said to have been miraculously sheltered from a rainstorm by an eagle hovering over him with outstretched wings. But it’s for the lore concerning the weather on his June 8th feast day that Saint Medardus is best known today, by those who remember him at all.
Unfortunately, developers are hungrily eying the 70-acre parcel despite some local opposition and the fact that it is a wetland that provides excellent habitat to a variety of birds (to say nothing of mammals, insects, etc).
Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. Ubiquitous Egyptian Geese dabbled in the shallows while a diminutive Squacco Heron stood motionless in some tangled vegetation over the water. Squacco Heron. This tiny kingfisher thoroughly excited everyone on board.
People of all ages and backgrounds brighten the ride and the book as they welcome Dorian to their homes (his blog asked for shelter and people responded, he also used a biking home-share group and motels) and help him find elusive birds (although Dorian is mostly on his own, there are occasions when help is crucial).
If left unchecked, free-roaming cats will breed and their populations increase at locations where they find suitable shelter and food, resulting in environmental/property damage, and public nuisance. Free-roaming cats will hunt and kill birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, resulting in wildlife mortality.
My hands-on experience is with small mammals/critters and cats. I remember posting last summer about an abused pit bull mother who was euthanized by our animal shelter for being food-aggressive. I don't know much about dogs other than what I read.
Sergio and I continue to a sloth shelter, where, waiting for the tour, I sit in a café. Or a mammal. Watching my first Brown Pelicans , I am inhaling deeply and commenting to Sergio Arias how strong the scent is. He answers: “Maybe the ganja those guys are smoking makes it that strong.”. Or even those pooie reptiles.
The event is to be held at Pacha on Thursday, October 22, 2009, and all funds raised will benefit the city’s broad rescue, shelter and adoption services. The animals are given shelter, vaccinated, medically evaluated, housed, and fed until they are reunited with their owners or adopted into loving homes.
The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. It provides shelter for many songbirds and water-associated animals, including the river otter, turtles, beaver, American pelicans, ospreys, and migratory songbirds.
The afternoon was spent sheltering on our deck as the rains came down and down, after which the birding was not so good (it seems to be a lot better in the morning). On the way down we were able to look at tribal graves in the cliff and rest in a pool under a waterfall – one with small fish that groom swimmers (your mileage may vary!).
There were several sandy patches that showed evidence of small mammals, but they were no doubt nocturnal. Wallabies were still digging in the salty ground and there was shade and shelter for them inside the crater. One large tree on the edge of the rim. I am uncertain of the exact species of dragon that we commonly found on the rim.
As I share a home with rescued cats and rabbits, I can't help but think that it's better for them to live their lives cared for and loved than to be put to death in a shelter somewhere due to irresponsible overbreeding, even if they are now confined to the house. The analogy to mammals we rescue is interesting; it's a good point.
Lango Camp deck overlooking Lango Baï, by Congo Conservation Company The forests of the Congo Basin contain more than a 1,000 species of birds, together with 400 species of mammals, including Okapi, Hippos, Leopards, Chimpanzees and Bonobos. Ba’Aka people are among the most well-known representatives of an ancient hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. There aren’t many mammal ticks on this trip, but the ones you get are pretty remarkable. It certainly has no known relatives. Laughing Owl.
It predicts “If the wall were constructed as described it would eliminate migratory movements of mammals, which could include endangered ocelots, mountain lions, Sonoran pronghorn, foxes, and deer that cross the Rio Grande for food or shelter, and lead to genetic inbreeding and eventually species extinction.”
