Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. We arrived at the rather untouristy seasite town of Lahad Datu where our guide dropped us off at the office of the lodge.

Basically, hornbills get paid by evolution to eat fruit, digest the fleshy parts, and regurgitate or defecate the rest – a means of seed transportation that is apparently quite attractive to many plants despite the yuck factor involved. For example , fallen figs do not seem to mind catching a ride with Oriental Pied Hornbills.

The eagle was so hypothermic I was reluctant to put her in a transport box. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. I put a blanket over her shoulders, as if she were an injured, elderly person, and carried her back to the truck. We put her on the clinic’s exam table.
