Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. Researchers can continue most experiments on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans -- after European Union lawmakers watered down proposals to restrict testing. It's from a Reuters article from last May.I
In December, the United States Department of Agriculture issued a warning letter to the primate center for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which regulates treatment of many commercial animals from pet kittens to laboratory guinea pigs. And the center added training and banned one researcher from animal contact in response.
This blogger, Earle Holland at Oregon State University, doesn't seem to believe the allegations coming out about the New Iberia Primate Center in Louisiana. He is the assistant vice president for research communications in the Office of University Relations. Tags: chimpanzees medicalresearch animal welfare.
2) Charles River Laboratories, Sparks and Reno, NV: Two primates undergoing surgical procedures were handled improperly. The USDA also entered an out-of-court $10,000 financial settlement with Charles River for a May, 2008 when too-hot temperatures led to the deaths of 32 primates. One subsequently had to be euthanized.
I don't support animal research and I have no sympathy for animal researchers. I don't believe they are working for human welfare. I almost quit a book club a year ago because one of the members is a proponent of medicalresearch. All of this BS by medicalresearchers must be challenged.
This became clear from a report addressed at the European Parliament (EP) session on May 5–7, which seeks to vote on a directive concerning animal research. Tags: animal experimentation europe animal researchmedicalresearch. I really hope this passes.
I had never heard of the use of ferrets in medicalresearch though. A national physicians group has filed a federal complaint against the University of Washington, saying its use of ferrets to train medical residents in emergency procedures on babies and children violates a federal animal-welfare law. News to me.
