I thought it was an urban myth that animal shelters would actually turn over unwanted animals to laboratories for research, but apparently not. The county has a contract with R&R Research in Howard City to euthanize the county's unwanted animals. In return, the company can use some of the unwanted dogs for animal research.
The American Quarter Horse Association, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), among many others, oppose the bill. The bill must be passed by the House and Senate before it can become law.
Traces of analgesics, antidepressants, antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-hypertension drugs, anti-seizure medications, and birth control hormones are turning up in the Nation's municipally-delivered drinking water and also in our rivers, lakes, and streams. Today, people have to worry about much more than fluoride in their water.
People can search Adopt-a-Pet.com to find a local shelter, and make a cash donation to that shelter to help them with the costs of housing, feeding and medical care of shelter animals. People can encourage other pet owners to spay or neuter their pet (link to our spay neuter page) to help prevent unwanted births.
That at least would be a start till our society puts a higher value on the lives and existence of our furry friends, till the law stands up for our 4-legged buddies, till shelters are no longer overflowing with the unwanted. Some pay for all medical bills, some even pay for food. Fostering is a wonderful experience.
