I’ve rescued field mice to horses, and everything in between. No: it is the fault of their owners, their former owners, or the Trap-Neuter-Release crowd. Dear Outdoor Cat Owners/Feral Cat Supporters, Does the photo above sicken you? It sickens me. I have been rescuing animals, both wild and domestic, since I was a child.

He isn’t arguing against cats kept in the home, and he is right in my mind to blast the SPCA for doing trap neuter release in New Zealand (something I wasn’t aware anyone was stupid enough to think was a good idea here). It’s undermined his own laudable efforts to clear the Antipodes of mice.

Trap-neuter-release programs sound nice and let folks think that they are doing good but they actually often add to the problem , and never reach the goal of zero feral cats in an area. As anyone who follows this blog knows, outdoor cats are a veritable holocaust for wild birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even insects.

New Zealand has been the recipient of a higher than average number of introduced species, in particular a range of mammals from elk to mice. This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years. In New Zealand at least public opinion is generally behind 1080.

It started with donation requests for spay and neutering cats but then quickly transferred to a trap, neuter and release organization. I have a dog, cats (domestic and feral), birds raccoons, hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, bunnies and mice…they all share the yard and the woods. I have mixed feelings about TNR.
