I thought maybe a bobcat but that wouldn’t make sense as I live in town in central Minnesota. It looked like a raccoon in shape and color, but had no stripes that i could see, it was larger and had a short tail. When it saw me it stared for a while then ran up a tree. Does anyone know what this could be?

I also found this 1995 account of a warbler in Minnesota that bore similarities both to the bird I saw this morning and to Audubon’s Carbonated Warbler, to which the Minnesota observers compared their bird. Not all the details fit, but David Sibley described some of the reasons that work should be taken with a grain of salt.

We had a snow storm approaching Minnesota last weekend and the day before I headed over to the bird feeders at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge to see if they were getting any Pine Siskins or Common Redpolls (surprisingly, no).
