A few states still have no checklists at all: Nebraska , Minnesota , Iowa , Kentucky , West Virginia , Mississippi , and Alabama. In contrast, the Collaborative has checklists from all but one of the 20 states with the most checklists, the exception being Minnesota. Even the nation’s capital has been ignored.

The new features are called “ Explore a National Wildlife Refuge ,” and they can be found in the “explore” tab under the “explore a region” sub-tab. For example, some hotspots within the boundaries of a National Wildlife Refuge are not consistently identified as such.

A Survey of U.S. Birders

The survey was a join effort with the University of Minnesota. Broadly speaking, birders care about the environment, particularly as it relates to wildlife habitat, and many donate accordingly: “Most respondents reported having donated to birdwatching and related issues (62%), as well as conservation of other birds (55%).”
