U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Proposes 2015 Expansion of Hunting and Fishing Opportunities on National Wildlife Refuges

Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. National wildlife refuges provide premier outdoor recreational opportunities across the Nation.

In contrast, the Collaborative has checklists from all but one of the 20 states with the most checklists, the exception being Minnesota. Even the nation’s capital has been ignored.

We had a snow storm approaching Minnesota last weekend and the day before I headed over to the bird feeders at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge to see if they were getting any Pine Siskins or Common Redpolls (surprisingly, no). The feeders were incredibly active which is to be expected before a snow storm.

The new features are called “ Explore a National Wildlife Refuge ,” and they can be found in the “explore” tab under the “explore a region” sub-tab. For example, some hotspots within the boundaries of a National Wildlife Refuge are not consistently identified as such.

Think Outside Of The Nest Box

I see them all over in marshes in Minnesota but I had never seen a duck use one. It’s called Woodworking for Wildlife and even though it’s put out by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, it can apply in other areas as well. If you live near water, you can try some duck nesting tubes.

A Survey of U.S. Birders

Broadly speaking, birders care about the environment, particularly as it relates to wildlife habitat, and many donate accordingly: “Most respondents reported having donated to birdwatching and related issues (62%), as well as conservation of other birds (55%).”
