My (belated) Best Bird of the Year 2011: Racket-tailed Treepie

I was in a bird photography hide in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand (with Alex Vargas) and we had just had an absolutely fabulous day enjoying and photographing a great variety of birds (and a Crab-eating Mongoose) when we were just getting ready to pack up and leave.

Birding Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town

I have seen unconcerned Cape Grey Mongoose and Four-striped Mice though. The gardens also have some mammals, although for the most part you’ll need to show up very early if you want to have any hope of seeing Cape Fox , Caracal and Cape Grysbok. The Forest Canary is one of several that can be found in the area.

Cape Mongoose are also easy to see. You can also get Black-necked Grebe here (Eared Grebe to Americans) and if for some reason you don’t want to see Greater Flamingos in a drainage ditch in the rest of the city you can see them here instead. The network of roads through the ponds are open to the public and easily birded from a car.
