A Morning at Punta Morales, Costa Rica

With shorebirds on my mind, the other day, we opted for birding at Punta Morales. Dawn broke somewhere on the way down and was accompanied by two species of caracaras patrolling the roads, a motmot or two on the wires, and early morning on the edge of the ocean. Panama Flycatchers and Streak-backed Orioles also fed at close range.

The prospect of identifying a certain number of species in a given amount of time pushes us to pay more attention to birds no matter what the circumstances (although I suggest keeping the exclamations about species identifications to yourself during such solemn situations as funerals, graduations, and watching episodes of The Sopranos).

Those would be migrants like Red-eyed Vireos, Swainson’s Thrushes, Scarlet Tanagers , Blackburnian Warblers , and Eastern Kingbirds along with less common species like the sublime Cerulean Warbler. Look to the sky and a constant movement of swallows pass overhead, mostly Barn and Cliffs but also Northern Rough-wings and Banks.
