With shorebirds on my mind, the other day, we opted for birding at Punta Morales. We reached the salt pans at Morales around six and were greeted by several White-fronted Parrots feeding on fruiting trees. Other dry forest species made appearances, Stripe-headed Sparrows being especially common.
Because this is New Guinea, it does not attract t**s, finches, and sparrows, but parrots and birds-of-paradise… as soon as a fresh load of papayas and bananas is brought out and thrown on the table, the forest comes alive.” “This lodge owes its fame to a 3-yards-long, moss-covered bird feeder table.
After starting the morning with an unsuccessful search for Rusty Sparrow in Orotina, we hit three main shorebird sites. These were the Guacalillo lagoons (basically part of the Tarcoles River estuary), the Chomes area, and the salt ponds at Punta Morales (Cocorocas). No sparrow but the dawn chorus was a treat.
That is because Lago de Cuitzeo receives a huge number of migratory waterfowl and shorebirds, with smaller numbers of sparrows, buntings, and other migratory birds in the areas around the lake’s shore. Not only are the species numbers good, but the spectacle of so, so many individual birds can be thrilling.
Surprisingly, the moral of the story ( as cited by the Brothers Grimm ) includes one aspect that I had never considered: “The moral of this story is, first, that no one, however distinguished he thinks himself, should make fun of a lesser man, even if this man is a hedgehog. This applies even more so to the Eurasian Tree Sparrow.
The other, more irritating issue was a tendency for the narration to get a bit thick with the breezy anthropomorphism – ‘bad’ brood parasites, ‘henpecked’ male White-throated Sparrows , and the like. Tales of Remarkable Birds is available now from Bloomsbury Publishing.
He is a Bird of bad moral Character. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. From France he wrote to his daughter expressing his displeasure: For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country.
According to Wikipedia, “A l owl ife is a term for a person who is considered morally unacceptable by their community” The local Nanhui shrikes are well aware that the word “lowlife” has an owl hidden inside, and mark the appearance of owls in their territory with harsh protests.
But this post isn’t about water slides, $15 rum drinks, the horrors of tourist traps, or the morality of pocketing bread from the breakfast buffet for later. House Sparrows were all over the place and as for other birds at the end of the taxonomic list well, I’ve saved one of the best for last. Shut up already Bananaquit !
You may not agree with it… but for millions of people across this nation hunting is a moral thing to do. .&# And then you seem to have no tolerance of a voice that that has a different viewpoint. It is OK for people to like to hunt. This proposed hunting season will clearly not impact the eastern population of sandhill cranes.
Ever the moral perfectionist, Franklin argued that the turkey was a much more honorable and determined fowl, and suggested the bird – as an “original Native of America” – would make a decidedly more fitting avian mascot for the United States (seemingly implying – incorrectly – that the Bald Eagle is not an indigenous New World species).
The Lesser Coucals sometimes try to argue with Chestnut-winged Cuckoos about the morality of having other species raise their chicks (The Lesser Coucal Species Committee also likes to point out that the species neither invaded Ukraine nor ever voted for Donald Trump – they can be a bit boring in insisting on always being on the good side).
