Those Springtime Blues

Canyon Wrens are another resident species that appears more often in the spring, even though they don’t visit the birdbath. I have managed to see 4 Warbling Vireos at the same time, 3 Nashville Warblers , 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers , and 2 Wilson’s and Orange-crowned Warblers. Black-vented Orioles really know how to bathe.

Please Don’t Ask for an Aztec

In the case of most of these wonderful bird species, I probably know where they are most likely to be found. The flowers also attracted quite a few Nashville Warblers , Orange-crowned Warblers , and Hooded Orioles. Another local species that loves burnt-over areas is the Gray Silky-Flycatcher. They are out there, always.

Hot Times at the Old Watering Hole

Well, my eBird records give me a total of 86 species, so far. At the height of our rainy season, I am likely to see only a dozen or so species here. On any given day I can count on seeing Wilson’s, Yellow-rumped (Audubon’s) , Nashville , and Orange-crowned Warblers.

Spring Migration on South Padre Island, Texas

So, maintaining habitat along the coastline is vital to supporting these species. Near the main building, there is a small native garden that attracts a diversity of species with bar stools along the fence for easy viewing (they even sell wine and beer inside). It also happens to be a good, free bathroom stop!

May Warblers, Costa Rican Style

Niagara Falls State Park, right above the cataracts, is where I used to bike to on May days to see dozens of fantastic chestnut Bay-breasted Warblers whispering from the canopy, American Redstarts and Tennessee Warblers and Nashville Warblers filling the woods with song. One of the common species of middle elevation habitats in Costa Rica.
