In addition to nest boxes around the property and bird feeders in the yard, the water feature is our most efficient wildlife magnet. I also added a new surprise species to my yard list, a Northern Mockingbird ( Mimus polyglottos )! It’s probably about 300 square feet in size, holding maybe 2000 gallons of water.

This did open up the area to a few new species, like this Wilson’s Warbler. Jeanne has long desired top photograph the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiestas ( You can see her photos here )and I wanted to visit the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. Along the irrigation canal, there were over a dozen species flying around.

Last year they shared over 1200 checklists and managed to achieve a stunning total of 2647 species from 32 countries. Last year’s magnificent total of 2647 species is the target to beat, but other results could prove interesting. 1499 species were seen in the eastern hemisphere in 2016. The year stretches ahead.

146 shared checklists (an increase on last year’s 97, well done chaps) noted 664 species (ooooh, down on 826 from last February) and brought the yearly total to 1063 (1303 at this time in 2016, ouch!).
