I didn’t travel much this year, with a June family trip to California and Nevada and a four-day trip in July to Trinidad and Tobago being my only opportunities to get birds not in the northeastern United States. Checking out Red-breasted Blackbirds at the Aripo Agricultural Research Station.

A few days ago, I received and then flipped through a bird guide of the Sierra Nevada (my way of coping with currently not being able to do birding trips outside of China, given the Covid policy of the Chinese government). This, as any scientist will tell you, surely requires further research. And additional grant money.

For birders, it’s the extremely large book, shelved in a place where it can’t crush the field guides, used to research the history of a bird in their area. The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Nevada (Univ. of Nevada Press, 2007) features a cover by David Sibley. A breeding bird atlas is a special kind of book.

The team explored Nevada and Utah, with Ridgway collecting thousands of bird specimen, plus nests and eggs for the Smithsonian. Ridgway himself had 23 species, 10 subspecies, and two genera of birds named for him, including Ridgway’s Hawk.)
