One element of Red Rock Canyon that I probably don’t need to see much better is the Black-throated Sparrow. Amphispiza bilineata is a species of the desert and it is found throughout proper habitat in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. … I hope you liked these shots of Black-throated Sparrows.

I’m one of those people who thinks all birds are beautiful, from the drab House Sparrow to the pink Roseate Spoonbill. The Mountain Bluebird is one of the most striking birds in the United States, and is the state bird of both Nevada and Idaho.

I recently despaired of ending this calendar year without seeing a single Wild Turkey when that species used to be so reliable in my part of New York. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a surprise Swamp Sparrow at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve in Nevada. How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend?

I am originally from California, so it is easy for me to deal with a geography defined by a low coastal mountain range, a central valley, and a much higher inland range (in California, the Sierra Nevada). As a birder, I was eager to find the quickest ways to reach these species from my home.
