Everyone always talks about how secretive rails are and how difficult it is to get a good look and I agree, most species are pretty darn unwilling to show themselves. Anyway, the point here is, well, that Clapper Rails are not a jinx bird for me. In fact, they are the opposite of a jinx bird. But not Clapper Rails , at least not for me.

There is another area of the Queens County CBC where a team will also likely see Monk Parakeets , Myipsitta monachus , but I am seriously determined to count that bird for my area, Coastal Flushing, a section of northeast Queens, New York, that includes Whitestone, home of one of the loudest invasive bird species in the U.S.

Originally from New Jersey, she has lived in South Carolina for over a decade, and was a great help identifying the shorebirds we found. No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species. As we continued, we passed shorebirds and more shorebirds, and I struggled to keep an accurate count.

That was the first thing we–our New Jersey Audubon group of 11 birders, led by Scott Barnes–noted as we exited the airport. We saw a smaller member of the potoo family, Northern Potoo , Nyctibius jamaicensis , at Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, boating and birding the Salado River. There was no snow. And, no snow.

We headed north to the George Washington Bridge, west across New Jersey, west and then north through Pennsylvania, and back into New York at Binghamton where we turned west once again. En route we talked about all the things that birders tend to do, from twitches past to who’s a stringer. All was not lost though.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. No time to take a picture.

Finally, the Similan Islands are perhaps one of the most beautiful islands in the world and form a stunning backdrop to this species, one of the loveliest pigeons in the world. I was a bit sad, too, that we had annoyed the owl enough that it felt it had to strafe us … my normal MO is to avoid stressing out wildlife.

Evening Grosbeaks are large, stunning birds, especially the males, with their distinct plumage and massive bills; I haven’t been fortunate enough to see any of the Evening Grosbeaks that have made their way south to NYC and New Jersey (yet), so I’m very happy I was able to spend time with these beauties this summer.
