Although the Juniper Titmouse is not officially a threatened species, its numbers have been declining due to loss of habitat. Most REAL montane species like this finch are declining in overall population. Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico. The Alpine Tundra seems to be shrinking and that will be the demise of this species along with a few others in the historic future to come.

This lake, with a surface area of up to 150 square miles in good years, is my go-to site for dozens of waterfowl and shorebird species, so I take its health personally. The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter. Both bore the darker colorations of the Blue Morph gene, but it was impossible to mistake the species for anything other than a Snow Goose. I love Snow Geese.

We did however see a Yellow-rumped Warbler at Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico on 16th November 1989 and a Townsend’s Warbler at Big Sur, California on 3rd December 1989.
