This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

She does, and her narrative serves as a role model for how to write about birds simply and knowledgeably; informing birds’ family stories with scientific facts and research findings. But research has shown that some plovers even use the super-sensitive soles of their feet to detect movement beneath the substrate. Consider Estero Lagoon for example… In North America there are nine regular plover species, ten if you include the more vagrant Common Ringed Plover. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.

For birders, it’s the extremely large book, shelved in a place where it can’t crush the field guides, used to research the history of a bird in their area. Corey did just this in this 2011 posting about Vesper Sparrow Pooecetes gramineus in New York State. Pileated Woodpecker, for example.
