Vaccinated, with no symptoms and negative tests to boot, Corey got to Prospect Park in Brooklyn and was very relieved that the previously reported Progne martin was still present, on its fourth day. Consensus is forming that the bird is a Gray-breasted Martin , a rarity that isn’t expected even in south Texas, much less NewYork.

This cruel, cruel fate we endure in western NewYork torments man and beast alike. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Once I looked at it through the binoculars I saw it was a male harrier.
I had racked up only twenty-odd species, all of which I’d have to be blindfolded to not see if I spent a year in NewYork City. So I brought along a new pair of Opticron Natura BGA binoculars. At least I could test them out. But I was determined that the trip not be a total loss.
I was lucky to work with the species on Tern Island in French Frigate Shoals. Learning to fly involves testing the wings. The important thing is that I get to see albatrosses and he doesn’t. They are rather attractive birds, almost completely a deep chocolatey brown as opposed to most albies.
