For the past several weeks a pair of Trumpeter Swans have made themselves at home along a road through Mattamuskeet NWR in eastern North Carolina. I know this for a fact, because this is precisely what I did last week when I spent a day in the eastern part of North Carolina chasing rarities.

North Carolina is perhaps unfortunate to have a lot of such places. I admit I underestimated the resolve of North Carolina’s listing community. Daylight broke around New Bern and the view turned to acres and acres of saltmarsh as I wound my way through this part of the state where I had spent far too little time.

Bird Banding the Dry Tortugas

There were ten students in total that had signed up for the spring break “Seabirds” course in Dry Tortugas National Park, and after long drives down from North Carolina we had all made it right on time. When I say “cut,” I mean paper-cut sized wounds here. Now, I don’t want anyone in the blogging audience to be alarmed.
