For some reason, the HBW specifically mentions that this species also breeds in a city park in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. There are some Azure-winged Magpies , which can also be found in Shanghai parks.

Habitat destruction, disease and hunting are still major problems that affect the conservation efforts, but the breeding sites and wintering grounds now have international protection. It breeds on a few rocky islands in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of North Korea. Captive breeding programs have not shown much success.

While the name suggests an endemic, it is not – it can also be found in Northeastern China, parts of Russia and the Koreas (though I would probably advise against a birding trip to North Korea). If you care for beetles rather than for woodpeckers, you might still be interested in protecting the bird.
