For some reason, the HBW specifically mentions that this species also breeds in a city park in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.

Three Hokkaido Woodpeckers

A Japanese book on Hokkaido birds lists 6 species of woodpeckers – I saw three of them, presumably the most common ones. While the name suggests an endemic, it is not – it can also be found in Northeastern China, parts of Russia and the Koreas (though I would probably advise against a birding trip to North Korea).

Varied Tit in Shanghai

The Varied Tit is a rare species in Shanghai – this was the first time I ever saw one, even though it is relatively common further North in China. Shanghaibirding reports that the species was seen in Shanghai in 2012, so it is not the first time but still a rare event for Shanghai birders.

However, the Latin species name is desgodinsi after Auguste Desgodins, a French missionary whose sole claim to fame seems to be that he attempted to enter Tibet in the early 1860s.
