This Snail Kite, photographed from my treacherous 1999 Honda Accord, was right outside Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, FL. This bird perenially winters on Lake Merritt, in the middle of Oakland, CA. Just because a place isn’t pretty doesn’t make it worthless to wildlife, so why not check it out?

I started at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge pre-dawn to pick up American Woodcock and then headed to the coast to see if there was any flight happening. A quick stop at the beach netted me some beach-nesting birds and then I did a quick tour of some woodland parks, Alley Pond Park and Oakland Lake. Not bad, not bad at all.
