Many imagine life on the Oregon Coast as idyllic. I regularly answer queries on the various Oregon Facebook pages about whether they are still around or have left already for the season. There just is not the forage fish available that the species needs to thrive and grow its numbers.

The Lesser Goldfinch: A Common California Species

The male (seen below) has a black cap and, in Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja California, nearly all males have green backs. Both of these species show gregarious flocking behavior except when nesting.

Week 28: Central Oregon.

First stop was a tour of the many small lakes that run along the east side of the Cascade Mountain Range, in central Oregon. We parked the RV in Big Pines RV camp, in the little town of Crescent, Oregon, and hoped for a favourable wind over night. Another fish loving species, the Bald Eagle made an early morning appearance at Wickiup.

Exploring eBird Mobile Tracks

I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track. The refuge is a popular birding location , and it has 229 species observed and nearly 8,000 checklists submitted. A Google Maps image is below that, for those unfamiliar with the area.

The Gas Station Bird

This may seem like government agency hair-splitting, but the calls needed to be made not to the wildlife division of the wildlife agency, but to the exotic species division of the wildlife agency. The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit.
