On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. in the morning.

Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice. The first time I spotted some movement on the water, focused my binos to see a Common Moorhen , but, hey, there’s something deep behind it, focusing further and seeing two otters diving and surfacing, swirling and playing. With more than 312 so far recorded bird species, Lake Kerkini National Park offers great birding year-round. In spring, a huge heronry of 10 species (including Spoonbill , Glossy Ibis , Squacco , Purple , and Night Heron , Pygmy Cormorant , etc.) and up to 9000 pairs forms in the north of the lake.

From there, we entered a side tributary full of Ringed and Amazon Kingfishers , with Chestnut-fronted and Scarlet Macaws in flight… and then the noise: groans, croaks and grunts… and the smell… of this 65 million years old species, so old that the last dinosaurs must have fed on them!

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

Twenty two species are distributed among six genera, depending on what happens to be extinct, and for the most part one grebe is like another. This makes Grebes vulnerable to climate change and the predation of invasive species. It is easy to see how Minks set lose in a welcoming habitat could eat an entire species.

A car also doubles as a good hide – many species will not respond to it (from personal experience, not just birds, but otters too). My colleague is a more aggressive driver and he had to call the local farmer for tractor assistance more than once. They are especially suitable for open terrains and larger birds.

I have observed this species many times (my eBird says 28 times this year alone) and never had one landing near me. The last Eurasian Otters were spotted here about the time the construction works started (I have observed them here half a dozen times, and other birders have seen them at least that many times).

I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.

There are more than 1100 plant species, the most valuable being the 76 endemics. Also, there are 58 mammal species represented in the park, which is home to the largest Brown Bear (50+ animals; bear watching can be arranged through the NP authorities, find the link below) and Chamois populations in Serbia.

In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. Supposedly, in Spring this area is teeming with migrating passerines, but in September, I recorded a mere dozen species, including very numerous Red-backed Shrikes (9 in this area alone). eBird hotspots of Prespa lakes. The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

Otters are regularly reported, but I’ve yet to see one here, but I have had a number of encounters with Wild Cats , which are quite common and may even be encountered during the day.

We encountered over thirty species of birds around the Singapore Sports Hub on each visit and the best location we found was close to the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Another surprise was that the Singapore Otters are quite content playing on the grass near the Indoor Stadium near where you can cross the river on the pedestrian bridge.

Spotting 57 species of birds in the couple of hours we put in to seeking out birds was never so ho-hum in my life. One final stop at a popular park in Queens netted us another nesting species that we only found because they can’t fly yet, Great Horned Owlets. So-so looks at a brown swallow. How exciting. Of course it did.

Targets acquired, we piled into cars and headed south to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges, the jewel of the Outer Banks, where we were likely to cross paths with the vast majority of our species for the day. In a little less than two hours we had gone from 2 species to nearly 70. We set up scopes and started tallying.

Walking beside the Pasir Ris Park Connector we watched otters playing in the water. We encountered several bird species there including a Yellow-rumped Flycatcher and a nesting Red-breasted Parakeet. It is also a good location for observing otters, squirrels and monitors. Black-naped Oriole. Oriental Pied Hornbill.

The species has been on my personal radar for North Carolina for years. After we’d looked at this plain gray bird long enough, we headed to the nature museum and gawked at Black Bears and River Otters and search unsuccessfully for the Mountain Lion. The looks were short, but the pug-billed finches were obvious even in flight.

It was a Benguela Nino year, and pelagic seabirds were in super-abundance in the south eastern Atlantic, with the total of species by variety and number exceeding all expectations for the birders on the inaugural trip as we pitched and wallowed about in the rolling swells on our way out to the trawling grounds.

A silhouetted Golden Eagle in flight appears on all current bottlings by Ardmore, and over the years, the same species has occasionally appeared on various products by Scottish distilleries like Glenfarclas and Mortlach. Swans swim on a small pond on the distillery grounds and deer and otters can be found by a trail that runs beside the burn.

The inscrutable species frustrated me and I found myself especially stumped by the difficulty I had distinguishing them, and wildly mystified by the excitement they inspired in my fellow-birders. A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. This species qualifies as Critically Endangered because extensive habitat destruction and capture for the cagebird trade are causing extremely rapid and continuing population declines. My OCD would not stand that!
