Pelicans are separate but are related to Hamerkop and Shoebill , and that group is related to herons and ibises. The van was parked at the Eastern Dyke of the lake and we were scanning the mud flats and numerous Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans with a few Greater Flamingos and Eurasian Spoonbills here and there, as well as one or two Purple and Black-crowned Night-Herons. Afterwards I added species #401, a female Red-crested Pochard along the eastern dyke and the last bird observed in 2017 turned out to be one lovely Little Owl , perhaps 15 metres from the Limneo Guesthouse. Further south, heading towards the dam, is a cove from where Nikos Gallios sails out for Dalmatian Pelican photography tours.

There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. I got out, stretched and looked an Eastern Screech-Owl straight into its gorgeous eyes. I think I’m in love with an owl. Take your pick: Eurasian Eagle Owl or just Uhu ? The birds warmed us too.

Not many birds, two Ruddy Turnstones , one Willet , a fishing boat in front of the beach with a small flock of Brown Pelicans surrounding it, several Magnificent Frigatebirds above it… and several smaller flocks of noisy Scarlet Macaws above us. Recently, there has been a Burrowing Owl hanging around that is easy to spot amongst the riprap near the river mouth. Digiscoped Burrowing Owl San Elijo Lagoon is a county park north of San Diego and is one of the region’s largest wetlands. As you approach, the combined odor of seabird excrement and sea lions fills the air.

It was a dark and foggy ride into Nags Head Woods, the only forest of any sort on the islands, and we paused every few hundred meters and listened for owls. Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. This group of American White Pelicans were good enough to stop right where I wanted them to, to get this shot. In the same shallow water as the pelicans, there were several hundred American Avocets.
