For many years now, I’ve resisted every form of listing software available, choosing instead to maintain my world and ABA life lists on a simple Excel spreadsheet. Imagine having to clarify every pygmy-owl, every whistling-duck, every brush-finch… the autocomplete on my cell phone is smarter than this. I blame Nate Swick.

A portable speaker is placed on the top of the car, playing Tawny Owl calls from a smartphone. E.g., based on so much in-city data, the software recognized towns and villages as the primary habitat for the Great Spotted Woodpecker , supposedly far more common in urban areas than in forests. The consequences were amusing.

There are 240+ breeding birds in Serbia, but the colonial breeders and raptors were treated separately, and for a few dozen uncommon species there wasn’t enough data for computer modeling software. Once in the forest, attention should be diverted to the White-backed Woodpecker , also Eurasian Woodcock , Stock Dove and Ural Owl.

Still, after I used modern software to turn the originally black-and-white photos into colored ones, some of them may still be worth looking at). Of course, seeing the Snowy Owl would alone be sufficient reason to cover this trip in a blog post. (Note: this post refers to a trip I took a long time ago, in 2015.

Though carefully removed with photo editing software, it is obvious that the bird in the air has been fixed by a wire. There are much better metaphors for mind-body dualism than owls with fake eyes on the backside of their head. For obvious reasons, there are no famous photos of Marilyn Monroe scratching her chin.
