This Yellow-crowned Amazon was not quite as vociferous as his Central American cousins And like many of these birds, I too love to spend time beneath the water – there are few things better than free diving or scuba diving with dolphins, whale sharks or coral reef fish. But what owl could possibly be this gaudy.

We spent our evenings cooking, playing cards, enjoying adult beverages, and listening to Barred Owls duets. On Friday night in particular there was a pair of Barred Owls that went through a full repertoire of Barred Owl sounds. You’ll remember Javi from whale-watching.

The landbird community on Santa Cruz is a strange mix; Northern Saw-whet Owls , Grasshopper Sparrows , Merlins , Black-headed Grosbeaks , Hooded Orioles , Common Poorwills , Horned Larks are a few of the species found here. In summer and fall, the waters around the Channel Islands can teem with Blue Whales.

But I’m not talking about owling, or listening for rails, or even pointing a microphone skyward to collect flight calls of migrants. Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to Bald Eagles in Whale Cove. I know you can bird in dark in New York and Newcastle, Weyburn and Walla Walla.

Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks. While studying, he also worked on various conservation/research projects (parrots, wagtails, vultures, and anything else that flew) and ringed thousands of birds. Wicked, right?
