Some might even protest at being kept separate, raising their voices as they eye the main conference birds with hungry intent. As loud as it is eye-catching, this big beautiful parrot has become pretty common in Costa Rica. Since it catches birds nearly as big as a turkey, it would need to be kept with the other raptors. The first time could be forgiven but he kept doing it despite our protests. I have been guided by David Letsoale and Paul Nkhumane for Cape Parrot and other difficult forest species. His lack of knowledge was just annoying, but the third and worst problem was his failure to grasp the concept of binoculars.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.
