The first sign of any positive effect was the appearance of several species of butterflies I hadn’t previously noticed. Of course, various species of bats as well.

The raising of the bins took place along roads through semi-shaded coffee farms and on the grounds of Villa San Ignacio , a hotel with big old wonderful trees and regenerating forest. But, they still occur, the most common species being Black Vulture , Turkey Vulture , Gray Hawk , Short-tailed Hawk , and Yellow-headed and Crested Caracaras.

A massive (largest member of the Amazona group of parrots) creature with searing red eyes set in a sea of blue, brown, and purple, the Imperial Parrot ( Amazona imperialis ) is a recluse of higher elevation forest on the island of Dominica.

The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders. It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. Picking up a bargain copy of the latest edition of the Parrots of the World by Joseph Forshaw. Joseph has forgotten more than I will ever know when it comes to parrots. In addition to this tight clustering of related parakeets, the genus also had two species in the far-flung Society Islands (now in French Polynesia).

We had observed 40 bird species by the time we reached Katherine and then Grant had some work calls and emails to deal with. There is an isolated population of this species in the Katherine area and they were bouncing around a park in town. Red-winged Parrots, Royal Spoonbill, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis and Magpie-lark.

The most common species are two types of honeyeater, the New Holland Honeyeater , a small black white and yellow species, and the larger Little Wattlebird.
