The Parrots of Howard Beach

But it wasn’t the history of Howard Beach that led Donna and I to Howard Beach a week ago: no, it was the parrots. Old Howard Beach in particular has quite a few of the large stick nests that the Monk Parakeets build, and their raucous cries can be regularly heard as the green, gray, and blue parrots wheel overhead. I know I do!

A Selection of Kenyan LBJ’s

Contrasting with the other larks’ habits of perching on the tops of acacia trees and hanging out along the roadways, Fischer’s Sparrow-Larks were intent on slipping through tall grasses. Speaking of sparrows, we managed to see several species, many of which were within Nairobi city limits. Isabelline Wheatear.

Common Hedgerow Birds of Costa Rica

Although more than one parrot and parakeet can forage in hedgerows, this long-tailed green bird is the most common. Rufous-collared Sparrow. We have House Sparrows too but this bird is much more common. This is our usual sparrow, the one that sings a cheery song from a roadside wire, the ones that forages on the ground.
