Pelican Release with International Bird Rescue

There are advantages to being a “Pelican Partner” for International Bird Rescue ! First, you get to tour one of their California centers , you get a special opportunity to see a Pelican getting its final medical exam and numbered leg band, plus you get the honor of releasing one, or in my case, two of their rehabilitated pelicans!

I have the photos of a standing White-faced Ibis next to wading Northern Pintails , Northern Shovelers , and American White Pelicans , to prove this.) And even when I did try, my counts came up significantly lower than the science people’s count. On the other hand, a college degree does not guarantee the ability to ID birds.

Morning on Weeks Bay

Dedicated to science, conservation, and education, the reserve focuses on the smaller Weeks Bay, which in turn connects to Mobile Bay. The water popped with rising menhaden, and giant Brown Pelicans dove with watery crashes after them. I was touring the reserve for two days, and felt pumped to get out on the water. A Relaxing Big Day in Florida

Blue Jays called near the boat ramp, and a lone, juvenile Brown Pelican paddled lazily in the lapping waves.
