There are advantages to being a “Pelican Partner” for International Bird Rescue ! First, you get to tour one of their California centers , you get a special opportunity to see a Pelican getting its final medical exam and numbered leg band, plus you get the honor of releasing one, or in my case, two of their rehabilitated pelicans!

I have the photos of a standing White-faced Ibis next to wading Northern Pintails , Northern Shovelers , and American White Pelicans , to prove this.) And even when I did try, my counts came up significantly lower than the science people’s count. This is only my second sighting of the species on Lake Cuitzeo.

After all, there are some epic splits coming your way… what do you think about new species of storm-petrel and murrelet that can be found in the United States?

Blue Jays called near the boat ramp, and a lone, juvenile Brown Pelican paddled lazily in the lapping waves. More pelicans buzzed the surface looking for an early dinner, while Willets and Sanderlings patrolled the sand for smaller meals. That my data would be used in a global citizen science event? Driving the boat.

There is no doubt in my mind that the annual Great Backyard Bird Coun t (GBBC) is the most impressive citizen science endeavor in the world. In all seasons birds are abundant, from the waterfowl and shorebirds in winter to the ubiquitous pelicans and Osprey that cut the sky with their long wingspans throughout the year.
