Greece: Pelicans galore at Lake Kerkini

We stop by one especially unruly nest with half a dozen round nests of Spanish Sparrows below – two are chatting on a wire right now – while at the first floor, inside the nest construction, the House Sparrows live; and, at the top floor, the White Storks are clapping their bills. Dalmatian Pelicans – nesting platform.

Prespa Lakes National Park, Greece: the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world

The other day I was exploring a new area for the first time, birding the national park that I’ve watched only in BBC documentaries, the place famous for the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world – more than 1300 pairs! Checking the birds on the stork’s nest, I found both House and Spanish Sparrows. Have you heard of it?

2017 starts off with Black-throated Sparrows

This allows me to see frigates, boobies, terns and pelicans on the saltwater side. This was a real bonus spot last year, especially with migratory sparrows. The biggest surprise this year was the large number of Black-throated Sparrows. In the same day, just a few meters up the arroyo, there is a plethora of desert species.

The northern half of the lake added Corn Bunting , European Turtle Dove , Dalmatian Pelican , Purple Heron , Eurasian Hobby , Eurasian Golden Oriole , Eurasian Green Woodpecker , and only the first of the several Masked Shrikes of the tour (cover photo by Kostas Papadopoulos).

What Birds Will Get Me To 300 In Queens?

Brown Pelican - Though two have been reported to eBird since 2008 this bird is even more of a long shot than Black Vulture. Two of the four Lark Sparrows I have seen in Queens Two out of ten is not good enough, leaving me smack-dab on the Mendoza Line. I wish I had put three sparrows on my last list instead of three shearwaters.

Rarity Roundup Reflections

Our two groups turned up a handful of lingering migrants – a pair of Blackpoll Warblers here, a Stilt Sandpiper there – and some locally uncommon birds like Lincoln’s Sparrow , but nothing that would cause rabid state listers to do little more than nod knowingly at our reports.
