He missed Brown Pelicans , a Brown Booby , and dozens of Great Shearwaters. Fortunately, there is whale-watching happening on the American Princess, out of Brooklyn, but spending lots of times in Queens waters. If you spend any time in the NYC Metro area, you know what I mean! How about you?
Northern Humpback Whales visit the waters surrounding Isla Isabel every year to mate and its not unusual to see dozens of these cetaceans breaching and whacking their tales on the ocean surface. We were woefully under-prepared in terms of planning – which almost kept us from meeting our friends – but we were also surprised and thrilled to learn that not only were Gray Whales migrating past the lighthouse, but Elephant Seals were lounging on a nearby beach! It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. Good times, I tell you what.
There were also countless Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, and Heermann’s Gulls, creating quite the cacophony. Bonus : A couple of years earlier, a blue whale washed up several miles south of Half Moon Bay, at Bean Hollow State Beach. It is acceptable to point out other sea creatures–dolphins or whales or dragonflies–but the main goal is the observation and identification of the birds. This, I am told, is seawatching , a birding activity in which one stands in one place, sometimes for hours, and watches for birds of the sea and lake and river.
Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. This colossal bird is now placed in its own family Balaenicipitidae and it forms an ancient link between storks and pelicans.
As a proof, two Dalmatian Pelicans are flying low above us, while a Bluethroat disappears into the nearby bush. I would love to find myself next to a Blue Whale , compared to which I am as miniature as that brave mouse was next to me, to be small and humble in admiration of the greatest animal on the planet. The Sun is just rising.
Anywhere you’re on the coast, and Sydeny has a lot of coast, you can find Silver Gulls , several kinds of cormorant, Australian Darters and Australian Pelicans. Along with Humpback Whales you have the chance of seeing Antipodean Albatrosses , Wilson’s Storm-petrels and Providence Petrels.
We also saw lots of dolphins in the ocean and Humpback Whale blow. Then Matthieu pointed out the Brown Pelican flying by over the ocean and all hell broke loose! Everyone managed to see the pelican except for one person (sorry, Donna ). Sometimes our attention wavered from birds like when this Black Swallowtail appeared.
I’ve been on a whale-watching trip in Orange County , twice gone out to Santa Cruz Island , and even visited Protection Island off the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Brown Pelicans cared not for my taint. Hordes of Brown Pelicans , Heermann’s Gulls , and Western Gulls made it clear we were on the west coast.
