There are advantages to being a “Pelican Partner” for International Bird Rescue ! First, you get to tour one of their California centers , you get a special opportunity to see a Pelican getting its final medical exam and numbered leg band, plus you get the honor of releasing one, or in my case, two of their rehabilitated pelicans!
The April 2010 Gulf oil spill was obviously devastating to the region’s wildlife. However, oiled birds would have suffered even more were it not for the relief workers attending to as many as they could.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville, Florida, is an amazing destination to see a wide variety of wildlife including, of course, birds! And while I didn’t lead any field trips to the refuge this year during the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival I did visit the refuge on a couple of occasions.
Since then, the majority of my guests became birders and wildlife photographers. About the same time, I made another dream come true, and started offering wildlife watching and photography boat tours at the lake. The post Birding and Wildlife photography at Limneo Lodge, Kerkini Lake, Greece appeared first on 10,000 Birds.
The American White Pelican ( Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ) is a huge bird! In breeding plumage, adult American White Pelicans have a distinct “centerboard&# or “horn&# on the ridge of their bill. I did see several American White Pelicans though, including this immature bird (click on photos for full sized images).
Injured wildlife are not the most cooperative of patients. Wildlife rehabilitators have an arsenal of equipment and techniques we use to protect ourselves. I was working at the Coastal Wildlife Rescue Center here in Alabama, and he had either been blown in during a storm or caught a ride on a ship.
I didn’t really have time to stop, but as I was passing by, I saw hundreds of American White Pelicans fly up and thought I’d better take a drive through and see what else was there. 6 Responses to “White-faced Ibis at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge&# Birding is Fun! This 12,000 square-foot facility, completed in February 2001, is one of the two primary oiled bird facilities built by the Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) in California. Last weekend I was treated to a tour of their San Francisco Bay facility, located in Fairfield, California, by the Wildlife Center Manager, Michelle Bellizzi.
HBO’s new documentary “SAVING PELICAN 895.” Directed by Academy-Award nominee Irene Taylor Brodsky (HBO’s “The Final Inch” and “Hear and Now”) the film is the story of the 895th pelican to be rescued and rehabilitated by a dedicated team of wildlife experts and everyday people, many of whom travel the world responding to oil disasters.
Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. National wildlife refuges provide premier outdoor recreational opportunities across the Nation.
“We had a call one morning about a snake and a hawk,” says Tom Sweets, the executive director and chief rescuer of the Key West Wildlife Center , located at the very tip of Florida. Key West Wildlife Center takes mostly birds, but will rescue mammals, marine mammals, and both land and sea turtles as well. Want to help this great place?
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be meeting on Wednesday and will be voting on the removal of sixteen species from the state’s endangered species list , including four birds – Snowy Egret , Brown Pelican , Limpkin , and White Ibis.
The towns of Rockport and Fulton are great examples of how one bird can inspire entire towns to celebrate their local wildlife. The competition lines up A contestant prepares The finish line Next time you’re birding the Coastal Bend of Texas, be sure to stop in at the Pickled Pelican. The loser buys the winner a beer.
This shaggy, slaty, storklike creature possesses a proboscis preposterous enough to put it in league with pelicans, toucans, and curlews. The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. Central Africa has one of those birds. Malachite Kingfisher.
Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. It comes as no surprise that this was one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite places and he filmed the area and its wildlife extensively for his tv series. The island is half a mile wide and about three-quarters of a mile in length.
A few weeks ago I led a field trip to Butte Valley Wildlife Area. It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart.
Back when I was trying to figure out what I should do during my time at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival I was advised by Doug Gochfeld to check out “the Gull spectacle on the beach at Daytona Beach Shores.” It is well worth the visit.
They are certainly not good enough to get me close to the world of professional wildlife photographers, but each is special to me in its own way. Then there was this wonderful pair of Brown Pelicans from Puerto Vallarta, who were amazingly nonchalant about my presence. I somehow doubt the boat was theirs.
Fish and Wildlife Service. On the short list of wins for wildlife during the Bush II era, Short-tailed Albatross were officially listed as Endangered in 2000. Brown Pelicans are not an unusual sight on the California coast. But within a couple of decades, it’s effects on both wildlife and humanity became apparent.
The order Suliformes holds a lot of special birds from anhingas and darters to cormorants and shags as well as frigatebirds, pelicans, and tropicbirds. Perhaps that explains why the Galapagos Conservation Trust raises funds to help protect the Islands’ unique wildlife and habitat through the celebration of Blue-footed Booby Day.
Rarities and other goodies — a Ross’s Goose , a first-of-season White Pelican — also turn up, but the main attraction at Freezeout is sheer numbers, and these numbers, this spectacle, draw a fair number of non-birders to the scene as well as the dedicated bird nerds. The result?

Up to 100 kg – possibly a female, my guide and a bear researcher from the wildlife charity Callisto, Yannis Tsanakis, tells me. The tour was organised by the Natural Greece ecotourism specialists from Athens, Greece, in collaboration with the Callisto wildlife charity which has done a lot of work on bears in this area.
Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. There is a 12 mile Wildlife Viewing Loop that can be driven, and is a great way to get a feel for the layout of the refuge. This group of American White Pelicans were good enough to stop right where I wanted them to, to get this shot. This shot was taken at 2:00 PM.
Number 8 – Brown Pelican. During my favorite birding event of the year, the annual Big Sit at Fort Tilden in Queens in October , we had hit a lull and were desperately trying to scrape up a few more species when Matthieu spotted a pelican and all was right with the Big Sit once again. I loved that I was seeing them at all!
Last Saturday we were able to visit Berry Springs Nature Reserve late in the afternoon, which is located to the south of Darwin and alongside the Territory Wildlife Park. The wildlife park is actually going to be 25 years old next month and will have free entry to celebrate. Or I could rename this post… CROCODILES and SNAKES!
Miracle upon miracle, I actually ran into my college friend at the visitor center, and now that that logistical snafu was taken care of I could actually focus on where I was and, even better, what wildlife we could see. The beauty of traveling lies in the unexpected. A line of Surf Scoters near the beach.
Wood Stork and White Pelican. Fish and Wildlife Service. Little by little, I expanded my horizons. One by one, birds that I’d thought of as pictures on a page became real. One of the highlights of the trip for me, and for some of the other media folks being hosted by the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, was a kayak tour of Tule Lake in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. Our guide, former wildlife refuge manager Mike Goddard, pointed out a pair of Cinnamon Teal in flagrante delicto.
Long-eared Owl – This is another owl species that was, like most winters, not seen in Queens (though tantalizing second-hand reports of one at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge during the Brooklyn CBC reached me). Brown Pelican – With all of that seawatching one of these birds is bound to show up! Now that was a good day!
Boat-tailed Grackles were ubiquitous and at any time a Brown Pelican could fly overhead. Nonetheless, I did my best and ended up with seventy-nine species in the just over five full days we spent there, a list slightly padded by visiting Oatland Island Wildlife Center, about fifteen minutes west of Tybee proper, one afternoon.
I always undertake a number of short timed surveys for the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count in February, and though the counts didn’t add anything to the year list, they were memorable for finding big flocks of finches and buntings, while a daylight-hunting Barn Owl was a pleasing sight.
Local rarities include mouth-watering birds such as Dalmatian Pelican , Slavonian Grebe , Ruddy Turnstone , Asian Desert Warbler , Moustached Warbler and the Calandra Lark. Ecotourism will no doubt arrive soon, and with luck its revenue will prove that there’s more to be gained from protecting wildlife than selling it to hunters.”
This post on Mongabay.com discusses whether we'll ever know the full extent of the oil spill's impact on wildlife. There are many animals that are "charisma species" that capture our attention, like pelicans and turtles, but what about the animals farther down on the food chain that we don't see.
Though they haven’t rated a mention thus far, Brown Pelicans were everywhere and are awesome. (Though I did make sure to go take my turn with him so Daisy got to check out the action from the deck of the boat and not be stuck watching from the cabin.). The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. It was mixed in with the American White Pelican, in the photo above. One big surprise for me was a single Trumpeter Swan , complete with neck collar.
I went to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. I also spent a bunch of time on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and, as usual, managed to see some birds on workdays. What happened at the end of January? Florida Scrub Jay ? Anhinga ? The month ended wonderfully with a blue moon.
Targets acquired, we piled into cars and headed south to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges, the jewel of the Outer Banks, where we were likely to cross paths with the vast majority of our species for the day. Though our focus was birds, there’s plenty of other wildlife on the islands. We set up scopes and started tallying.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge.
Despite the eyesore that is this mine, the wildlife continues to thrive in this harsh environment. Brown Pelicans.
