Aleksandar started birdwatching when he was 10, after a face-to-face encounter with an Erect-crested penguin. As we passed by a small body of water a couple of Apolinar’s Wrens ( Cistothorus apolinari ) skittered in between the stalks of grass and one of them even sort of displayed on top of a small plant with its tail raised high up.

White-tailed Lapwing by Jochen Roeder Duncan made a surprising choice: While the twitchers might have gone with the lost Emperor Penguin that washed up in June , my heart belongs to another. And so I came, twitched, remained and watched instead of coming, twitching and driving on. That takes some doing, but Charlie was the bird to do it.

Another question this raises has to do with migration itself. A fascinating exception to this, of course, are penguins. In other words, many sorts of animals might benefit from migration, but those with powered flight might be able to develop a migratory behavior more easily than those stuck to the ground on hooves.
