Penguins here! <pause> There are few bird names that will elicit great big smiles and Penguin is one of them. I’ve been fortunate to see two Penguinspecies in the wild (African and Galapagos) and have dreamed of seeing more–maybe even all! The full-length species accounts are not repeated.
The birdlife in the Cape is nothing short of spectacular, with a healthy dose of charismatic endemic species. Over 40 species of South African endemics can be found in the Cape – Cape Sugarbirds, Cape Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbirds to name but a few. An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick.
Artists rendition of Inkayacu paracasensis There are 17 living species of penguins, which make up their own Linnean family (Spheniscidae), which is the only family in the order Sphenisciformes. You may think of penguins as cold-adapted and they are, but there are penguins living in temperate and tropical areas as well.
Sometimes it’s a dignified depiction of a local species with some significance to the producer – especially when it comes to wineries, who are always eager to advertise their sense of place and a deep connection between the land and their product. Maybe the point is that penguins are comical? Even the word “penguin” is a bit silly.
So here are some photos of penguins instead. African Penguins, or Jackass Penguins as they are sometimes known, are one of those species of penguin you’ll find away from the frozen wastes of Antarctica. It was certainly more fun than the last penguin I wrote about. Boulders Beach. And a moulting site.
Who can resist penguins and whales? The section South Georgia Wildlife describes 65 species of birds, 20 species of sea mammals, nearly 60 species of insects, and more than 40 species of flowering and nonflowering plants. South Georgia is home to the King Penguin, the second largest penguin in the world.
Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand. Ulva Island is one of many New Zealand islands that the DOC has worked very hard to remove all the pests, and re-introduce many of the endangered species.
Across the world’s northern oceans, 24 species of auklets, murres, puffins, guillemots, and related seabirds make a living catching food beneath the waves and breeding, often in large colonies, on coastlines and islands. Unlike the southern hemisphere’s penguins, however, alcids can also use those flipper wings to fly.
But still, there is variation in variation and how rapid climate change occurs can matter, as demonstrated in a paper just published in Science: The Influence of Late Quaternary Climate-Change Velocity on Species Endemism. Species diversity drops and the systems become very simple and uninteresting, and probably not very stable.
If you love penguins, and you love Doctor Who , you won’t want to miss this David Tennant–narrated miniseries on PBS. Penguins are also being touted as a way to gauge the health of oceans.). Still craving more penguin news? Sea World San Diego just welcomed the world’s first “test-tube” penguin.
The Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to list six species of penguin as threatened species and one _ the African penguin _ as an endangered species. Tags: bush penguins endangered species.
On November 30, SeaWorld Orlando welcomed the first chick to hatch at Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, the all-new attraction featuring a colony of more than 250 penguins from four species – king, Adelie, gentoo and rockhopper. Be sure to check out the penguin cam , maybe you will catch a glimpse of the new chick!
Penguins are, obviously, penguins, which makes them awesome. That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Uganda may offer a chance at x% of the world’s bird species—birds we fully intended on tracking down—but the Shoebill surpasses them all in importance.
Take Madagascar, for example, one of the world’s highest-priority Biodiversity Hotspots: that island-continent is most famous for its penguins. Well, sort of, as there are no penguins in Madagascar, indigenous or otherwise. Still, there should be no problem with larger species that allow for longer observation time (e.g.
I wanted Penguins. The African Penguins (formerly known as Jackass Penguins) were pretty much a “gotcha”, but I was still tremendously excited to see them on two field trips–the Boulders colony by False Bay and at the Stony Point colony at Betty’s Bay in the Western Cape. And Sunbirds.
When you mention “Africa” to a birder, it is likely that at least two thirds will instantly think “Kenya”, and for a good reason: it is home to over 1,060 bird species and boasts many globally important birding areas. Each site gets from 2 to 5 pages (but mostly 3-4). Endemics are indicated with a bracket “(E)”.
So much so that the two species are placed within their own family, Chaetopidae. The species is insectivorous and nests amongst the scree and boulders on the steep mountain slopes. A Crowned Cormorant by Adam Riley African Penguin by Adam Riley Rooiels truly is one of my favorite destinations on the planet.
And penguins. Forget about penguins. The Galapagos and South African penguins may be OK but many of those living in the Antarctic are doomed. “The birds” as a whole will be “fine” but many individual species will not. Break just one link of the chain and the entire species is in trouble.
Noah Strycker, author of The Thing with Feathers and Among Penguins , will be doing a world-wide Big Year in 2015. In 2015 I will try to crush the worldwide Big Year record: My goal is to see 5,000 species of birds between January 1 and December 31. And, for fun, put your prediction for his species total in the comments.
Invading rats with bodies up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) long have begun eating eggs and chicks, and some experts fear that unless the rats are eradicated, they could tip the Humboldt penguin toward extinction.
One of only two species in the plover genus Thinornis , the other being Australia’s Hooded Plover , this species is another New Zealand endemic. Actually, it’s one I originally thought was endemic to the Chatham Islands, a group of islands to the east of the main islands that hosts endemic species like the Black Robin.
People go to Boulder’s Beach for one reason… penguins! It’s the easiest place in the world to see wild penguins (well, except for the parking in summer), namely African Penguins. But mostly, just drink in the penguins! African Penguin! Boulder’s Beach. Boulder’s Beach. Strandfontein.
An absolute highlight were the African Penguins at Boulders Beach. The colony is a proper tourist attraction with an entrance fee and way too many people, but the penguins still make it worth going. The species is endangered – hopefully, their appeal to tourists and the resulting revenue will contribute to its protection.
As part of the Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil giveaway we asked readers of 10,000 Birds to name the bird in Brazil that they would like to see more than any other species. What follows are the responses that readers offered, a veritable aviary of sought after species. Jean Loscalzo is a penguin buff (Can you blame her?)
There are, for example, the Penguins and Diving Ducks. You should know by now that there are a good number of birds that spend an appreciable amount of time underwater. And then there are the crazy-awesome Dippers and one should not forget the great diving birds like Gannets and Albatrosses.
Mark]: This luscious book, Penguins: The Ultimate Guide , by De Roy, Jones, and Cornthwaite, is the second edition of a book first published in 2015. Myers, a professional birding guide in “real life,” summarizes the etymology and history of all common bird names (of bird families and groups, not all 10,000-plus species).
There are two species, rather conservatively named the Southern Giant Petrel and, the star of today’s show, the Northern Giant Petrel. On land their diet is dominated bu birds, predominately penguins. Northern Giant Petrel ( Macronectes halli ). The giant petrels share more than just their size with the albatrosses.
It was a Benguela Nino year, and pelagic seabirds were in super-abundance in the south eastern Atlantic, with the total of species by variety and number exceeding all expectations for the birders on the inaugural trip as we pitched and wallowed about in the rolling swells on our way out to the trawling grounds.
Listservs across the state suddenly lit up with posts about where and how many of these alcids were being seen, with records streaming in from such unlikely places as Dry Tortugas National Park, Key West, Fort de Soto, and as far west as Pensacola — there had been only one previous record of this species in the Gulf of Mexico before 2012.
processed the entire genomes of 48 bird species and compared nearly 42 million base pairs of DNA (Hackett et al. Now we move on to the Neognathae , which also has two very deep branches that lead to all the other living species of birds. Erich Jarvis discuss key findings. ). were revolutionary for using 32,000 base pairs!) This is why.
Spotted Shags are a possibility, and one time I even saw a Little Penguin swimming around right next to the waterfront along which hundreds of people were walking towards the main stadium (it was a few hours away from a World Cup match between South Africa and Australia). But many species are also capable divers.
If you’ve read my posts before you’d know I’ve written at length about the devastating effects of introduced mammals in New Zealand, and also of the ways that New Zealanders have been working to save their species from those same mammals. Spread the word and support the project if you can at Million Dollar Mouse !
If the avian realm had self-conscious, talking ambassadors, “spokebirds”, which species would partake in birding conferences? Penguins would need on site-freezers or other forms of strict climate control, and who would keep the Corvids from playing tricks and getting out of control? Ditto for the Kea. Emerald Tanager.
Twenty two species are distributed among six genera, depending on what happens to be extinct, and for the most part one grebe is like another. This makes Grebes vulnerable to climate change and the predation of invasive species. It is easy to see how Minks set lose in a welcoming habitat could eat an entire species.
You can’t say the same about migration: you can’t say that every book about birds is necessarily about migration, for the simple reason that only about 4,000 bird species migrate (with some 1,800 of those traveling long distances). (Well, purely physical attributes play a part, too: they’re pretty good looking.).
Many people still do not see the value in treating oiled wildlife but as more and more species head for extinction at a greater rate than ever before, perhaps this attitude will in itself become extinct for it has no place in today’s world.” Remember Alice Berkner, the nurse that founded this organization?
Since November 30, a total of 15 penguin chicks have hatched at Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, the all-new attraction which features a colony of more than 250 penguins from four species – king, Adelie, gentoo and rockhopper. cute of the day penguins wildlife'
It has also found its way to Japan where it is considered to be an invasive species. Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird. It is sometimes known as the European Catfish.
I’ve been thinking about petrels a lot since last week’s post, probably because I am planning a trip to the Otago Peninsula soon which should get me a whole raft of petrels and penguins. Indeed their name reflects where the species was first collected; the Cape of Good Hope, even though none breed anywhere close to there!
I did that with Peacocks & Picathartes – Reflections on Africa’s birdlife (published by Penguin Random House South Africa ). And apart from local people, primate researchers sometimes spot it, but it is a species seen by fewer than ten living birders. Some are incredibly rare and hard to find.
Everybody knew ducks, but flamingos represented travel — especially, in those days, to Florida, where the trend of naming things after the species you extirpated to put those things there was already taking strong hold. Flamingos represented Vegas and Miami and pre-Castro Cuba. Or maybe my blue lawn herons. Photo by Aaron Amendolia.
It’s not often that we have the opportunity to glimpse the home life of albatrosses, nor of any seabird species. Where does the female Emperor Penguin go after she has produced that one egg and handed it over to the male for incubation? What about incubation shifts? Bruce Pearson is the book illustrator.
It is one of several species I saw while backpacking here 12 years ago but haven’t seen while living here. Yellow-eyed Penguin ( Megadyptes antipodes ) ( CC Daniele Sartori ) I’d have to go to Dunedin to see this bird, but if I went there it would not be a hard one to see, or see well. I just have to go and look.
This is a good place to see the endangered and beautiful Yellowhead and the endemic Yellow-eyed Penguin. Along with the Northern Royal Albatrosses the peninsula also has a good population of Yellow-eyed Penguin, and you don’t have to get on a boat to see either! Yellow-eyed Penguin at Otago Peninsula.
