It’s quite amazing how birds that we are used to seeing much of the year on coastal mudflats, exploiting the intertidal, change their habits and take to the hills to raise their young. Here on Shetland, it is the larger shorebirds that immediately catch the eye.
Burrowing Owls have been present at our school camera location since at least 1984. The owls from the old burrow area near the classrooms continue to raise multiple broods and 2 other pairs have since moved in. Interestingly, unlike other Burrowing Owls , the owls at this particular school are known to raise multiple broods a year.

But when raised, they seem to have a sort of weird cape. In other words, they never raise their own young. Instead, they lay their eggs in other species’ nests, and let those nest-making birds (often significantly smaller than the cowbirds) raise their young. But in most light, they appear to have a shiny black color.
The sightings raise several questions. If they had already been present, one would think that someone would have found them but then again, they were seen in a restricted and little visited area, and are nocturnal. Where did they come from? Have they always been there? Are other isolated populations waiting to be found?
When the land is flooded after rain it will move inland and breed at the ephemeral lakes and raise its young there. During our cool dry months there will be hundreds along the shores of Roebuck Bay and they are also present at the Poo Ponds and the adjoining beach. Black-winged Stilt wading in slimy and sloppy puddles.
Those of us who were raised in the four-season north (here in Michoacán one could define, at the most, three seasons) tend to think of avian migration in terms of seasonal temperatures. For us, it’s all about birds moving north during the warm season to breed, and south to escape the winter cold.
I previously wrote a post entitled “Plugging Kids into Birding” in which I presented 10 ways to get kids into birding. Ken Keffer was born and raised in Wyoming. Stacy and Ken’s wonderfully written book takes this post 438 steps further and will delight both children and parents alike.
I can’t walk too quietly, because I need snakes to know I am present and allow them to move away from the trail that I am on. I raised my binoculars and there was one huge male Koala relaxing in the fork of the tall tree. There were no adult birds present at the time. Feeding time at the Rufous Fantail nest.
We raised this little fella to a young adult. One could have been just another cat-triggered tragedy ( keep your cats indoors ) turned into an unforgettable experience… My wife and I (retired) had a truly wonderful experience at the end of 2011 when our cat brought in a newly hatched Dikkop. A very special experience!!
Which would travel to tourism conventions, give fun presentations and hand out cultural knick-knacks? Some might even protest at being kept separate, raising their voices as they eye the main conference birds with hungry intent. Wait, what about the Resplendent Quetzal ?
I landed in Tulsa on a Saturday, and later that night Kim told me the presentation I was scheduled to give the following afternoon might be sparsely attended, if not canceled, because of the approaching snowstorm. Each summer Seinna, her father, and her mother Christy raise nestling songbirds as subpermittees of WING-IT.
But when a female is present, it may move into the light and show its full colors. Apparently, there is some controversy about whether this species is a sunbird or rather a spiderhunter – a paper presents arguments for both but seems to lean toward the sunbird association.
As in many parts of the present world, the best accessible habitat is usually at the end of a distant road. On our final night at this sustainable, non-impact lodge, Luna Lodge’s owner, Lana Wedmore, gave a presentation about threats to the rainforests between the lodge and the national park.
For me, a bird called the California Condor has taken over more of my thoughts lately, and I decided it was time to see one before giving a presentation about it to the Rachel Carson Commemoration at the National Aviary in May. My first view of them was at a distance.

Curse those ministering, rehabbing angels for their kindness and dedication and for presenting me with such a quandry. The questions that are raised with a rehab bird are things like; without human help, would the bird have lived? It was a rehabilitated bird that had been released into the park. Would it be here in a city park?
We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents. They are the only pair in our area that lay three eggs, with all other pairs generally laying two eggs and sometimes only one egg on their second attempt.
Presently I find the sit-and-wait approach much more gratifying. I was saddened when I saw a White-lined Tanager feeding a Shiny Cowbird , but felt relieved a few weeks later when I saw her raising young of her own species. For me, my personal ethos is simply to see what’s available. Yup, that’s it. Let me explain.
I had the beach to myself as is often the case and raised my binoculars to observe a lone Little Curlew at the back of the flock of shorebirds. Having checked the various ovals I was back down on Cable Beach having one of our regular walks. There was a huge flock of shorebirds roosting on high tide on 16th September around midday.
They were present in Karori Sanctuary but have declined as other species have prospered. This isn’t because they are particularly rare; I’ll see them fairly easily in suitable habitat. There just aren’t many around, say, Wellington, were I do most of my birding. I’m not actually sure why this is. Yay for Tomtits!

That made everyone happy (with the possible exception of other publishers).
Try not to keep your walks too structured but present a challenge to your kids like “How many birds can we see on this walk. This book explains how we are all at risk of raising kids with nature deficit disorder. Some specimens in the hand also presented difficulties. If the bird raises its wings, it’s likely flying – and good luck trying to get a good view of a flying snipe! Any snipe on Tobago would be a Wilson’s Snipe. This all changed a few days ago, when I got a call about a distressed bird in someone’s backyard.
Here, I present not a full detailing of the supplement’s contents but some highlights and reflections based upon my own interests and peculiarities. I include links to other excellent coverage at the end and also welcome your reactions and questions.

Add into that picture that the last time I observed the endangered Saker Falcon in Serbia was here – but three years ago, when squirrels were still present. Two years ago for the first time I noted that not a single souslik was seen, and it hasn’t been seen ever since. The story is even worse with the vulnerable Eastern Imperial Eagle.
I do not (yet) have any accessibility issues, and my only experience regarding anything akin to accessibility has been limited to the period when my daughter was in a stroller, which presents only a tiny sliver of the challenges faced by many. Some access issues are addressed by federal law.
