Here is the Editor of "New Scientist" who suppports animal research, BUT he points out the terrible quality of the research and reliability of the results. It really hurts the scientific community's arguments that animal research saves lives. It's more fuel for opponents.

Animal welfare watchdog group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN), has released documents which, it claims, provide evidence that CRO MPI Research has been operating in violation of the US Animal Welfare Act. They include reports on 16 incidences of fractures received by primates and one swine during handling between 2007 and 2009.

The Atlas of Birds: Diversity, Behavior, and Conservation by Mike Unwin is a collection of data about birds and their environments presented through words, graphics, and photographs.

The colony steadily increased, so by 1970, some 32 pairs were present. Each tower has the capacity for 500 pairs, while each nesting space is fitted with a sliding Perspex panel, enabling researchers to view the Kittiwakes from inside the structures without the birds being able to see them.

Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. In the winters the snow lies heavy and researchers travel in and out by small plane.

So, insects, the ultimate fliers of today’s world, probably took more time to go from terrestrial to flying than the period of time since the last non-avian dinosaurs to the present. Birds evolved from bipedal terrestrial animals to flying creatures over a roughly similar time range (roughly… meaning, tens of millions of years).

This is a delightful book, large (8-1/2 by 11 inches), filled with Sibley’s distinctive artwork and an organized potpourri of research-based stories about the science behind bird’s lives. This was a pleasant surprise if only because I’m so used to the more technical views presented in his field guides.
