With the growing awareness of pet overpopulation more and more families are choosing to adopt a shelter dog and save a life. Right at the top of the list is the awareness that your new rescue has a shady history, especially if it was a stray. Many shelters have the ability to test dogs with other dogs as well as cats.

Investigative journalism by the Salt Lake Tribune, following-up on allegations levelled by PETA against the University of Utah's Comparative Medicine Center and the Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute laboratories revealed the two laboratories had used 190 dogs and cats in 2009, all obtained from shelters.

NEW JERSEY – Animal shelters are full, they have no space, they often have no money, and they have a small amount of dedicated volunteers. There is an estimated 3-4million pets euthanized each year in US animal shelters. There is a strong lack of homes willing to open their doors to fostering a shelter pet.
