The HumaneSociety Legislative Fund is having a contest where you can submit your idea for a new law protectinganimals. The winner will get a trip to Washington DC to lobby for it with HSLF staff.
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) received the HumaneSociety’s Legislative Leader award for her leadership in protectinganimals. The HumaneSociety of the United States cited Senator Cantwell’s efforts to improve marine mammal rescue capability, including such challenges as disentangling marine mammals from fishing nets.
While the HumaneSociety was pretty happy with Vilsack as Obama's pick for the Department of Agriculture, the Farm Sanctuary is wary. I’m glad that Obama didn’t select Charles Stenholm, a former Texas congressman with a long history of defending animal abuse, who had sought the position with support from the factory farming industry.
An enormous victory was achieved for animals this week when nearly 200 dogs and 54 cats were rescued from a North Carolina animal testing facility that closed its doors after an undercover investigation revealed apparent abuse of the animals by workers at the facility.
To the Editor: Re “ A Disgraceful Farm Bill ” (editorial, May 16): While the farm bill recently approved by Congress deals with enormous agricultural policy issues, it also includes three important provisions to protectanimal welfare. These new penalties would give the law some much needed teeth.
