Since August 23rd 2022 it has been considered a part of the newly protected Foreland of the Left Bank of the Danube Reserve. The initiative to protect this area was launched in 2010. And in August 2022, Beljarica and the wider Danube Backwaters finally became officially protected. I am glad it is finally protected.

Also, it is a part of the international ecological corridor and the “Confluence of the Sava and the Danube Rivers” Important Bird Area (IBA), already proposed for a nature reserve by the Government’s Institute for the Protection of Nature of Serbia. Not just mine, but all the most active birders of Belgrade, Serbia, were visiting this site at least 2-3 times a month: it is so conveniently close to the city, and even reachable by the city bus 108. Then a famous local actress, Svetlana Bojkovic, visited the protesters when a loaded lorry arrived, so she took part in stopping it.

At first I thought of a possible road accident, but soon I learned that protesting farmers have blocked the road ahead. Not at all, they are very right to protest, and I have no issue with the farmers – we all share the same enemy, our own President. Why should something so unimaginable in Germany be possible in Serbia?

Have you heard of a small town in Serbia graced by the presence of its 700 communally roosting Long-eared Owls ? Rightfully, this town centre doubles as a nature reserve – an officially protected owl habitat. Many social network protesters found it obscene. Actually, the numbers are even higher.
