Spotlight: Lisa Beth Acton, Raising Ravens

This summer Lisa raised three orphaned Common Ravens. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. We decided to raise them, and hoped they would wild up quickly if we followed the protocol for avoiding imprinting. She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl.

Protection for a fee: Band-tailed Gulls and Red-legged Cormorants

The following photo sequence depicts a territorial Band-tailed Gull “collecting its protection service fee” from a Red-legged Cormorant nesting within the territory the gull protects on the Palomino Islands in front of Lima-Peru. This system of “fee” in exchange for protection from being overwhelmed by many thieves seems to work.

School Burrowing Owls

Through various education initiatives and with help from Project Perch many of the schools now protect their owls by providing suitable habitat and burrows. The owls from the old burrow area near the classrooms continue to raise multiple broods and 2 other pairs have since moved in. One of the owls with a frog after a rainstorm.
