Formerly known as Jackass Penguins , a reference to their strange braying calls, African Penguins have become the unofficial mascots of marine conservation in the region. This example is important because it appears that the protector species, not just the protected species, gains a benefit, the latter having been documented many times before. For the many breeding birds facing high nest-predation pressure, enemy-free space can be gained by nesting near more formidable animals for physical protection.

Though the name Packer is derived from some guy who built a cabin nearby*, Lewis and Clark called it the Quamash Meadow, and my friends here in Missoula refer to it as “the camas fields” to this day. Today, the camas fields rest protected in the vast bosom of the Clearwater National Forest. It seems more appropriate.

There are very few reports from sites further afield although with all public and most private parks closed, a birder can’t go to such official protected areas anyways. “Cangreja” means crab in Spanish and refers to the shape of the mid-sized peak at the center of the protected area. On account of its remote nature, this is one of the lesser known protected areas in Costa Rica but that doesn’t keep it from being an excellent area for birding.

This little town of about 100 is located right next to what is considered the largest coral reef in all of Mexico [link] which is very well protected with in the boundaries of a Federal Marine Reserve. The highlight of the porch, was the beautiful bird bath, or “Cabo Pulmo Poolside”, as we started to refer to it.
